Find out about my Morrocan packing guide, and what to wear in Morocco for women in hot summer weather.
I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Marrakech, Morocco in August of 2018 for 6 days. I had obviously thought about what to wear in Morocco particularly in Marrakech as a female traveler and did my research prior to entering a new city.
Morocco is a Muslim country and there are some rules regarding dress code for foreigners at holy sights like mosques. However, no one gets in trouble there as a foreigner wearing a dress. I knew that Morocco is a conservative and Muslim country where local women have to be fully covered when it comes to their sense of style.

On the other hand, though, I did encounter so many foreigners mostly young girls and even older women of different nationalities wearing mini dresses, shorts, short dresses, short skirts, and tank tops (showing cleavage and legs) while wandering around Marrakech. I did wonder how much unwanted and weird attention and stares they got from the locals.
One time, I encountered some tourists eating at a restaurant wearing almost nothing. I remember them wearing a tank top (almost like a sports bra), and a tiny mini skirt that showed their butt. I never judged them, but I was more concerned about their own safety whether they might get harassed while walking along the streets or not.

I was there in August, in the middle of summer, and did find it quite challenging to decide what to wear, but here are some of my outfits that I would like to share with you.
Before I get carried away by sharing all of the outfits that I wore in Marrakech, Morocco, I must point out that I still remained respectful of the customs and culture. In that sense, I mostly covered my chest by using a scarf while walking around the streets because I mostly wore off-shoulder dresses.
What To Wear In Morocco?
1. Mid-Length Kaftan Dresses
Kaftan dresses are very common in Morroco amongst locals and tourists. You can wear it in a variety of styles, and it also comes in different lengths, styles, and sizes.

As you can see, I wore my Kaftan dress in an off-shoulder style with a string belt, however, when I walked around in public I did lift the shoulder sleeves up to cover my shoulders, and I also wore a scarf over my shoulders as to not attract unwanted attention.

The best part I love about wearing a Kaftan dress is that it’s an extremely light fabric and super breezy. It’s a perfect dress to wear in the summer while still looking stylish and slightly covered.

It’s loose enough that you would still feel some air passing through the dress into your body. Whereas wearing a tighter dress can feel a bit suffocating in hot weather.

2. A Long Scarf Skirt With A Spaghetti Top And A Scarf
If you love styling your clothes and enjoy being creative, then I highly suggest mixing different pieces together so you’ll end up with a unique style that you would never have thought of wearing.

With this style, I just wore a white spaghetti strap top, and denim shorts underneath and wrapped myself around with my silky light pink scarf into a long skirt and tied a knot that sits on my right hip. That created a beautiful slit on one side of the long skirt.

I then used my simple white scarf to wrap it around my shoulder and upper body to create an illusion that it is actually part of the skirt. You can wear any spaghetti strap top or any top you desire.
To make it even more modern Moroccan style, I added a very light scarf as my headband. As you may have noticed that I was obsessed with wearing a light scarf as my headband while I was in Morocco and I even carried that practice through to Italy.
3. A Floral Maxi Dress
I don’t own that many floral dresses, but thank god that I wore this maxi dress during our first day in Marrakech.
This dress was a breeze. It was light and loose enough yet flattering to my body shape. My skin was actually able to breathe through how light the garment is.

As you can see that I styled that dress with an off-the-shoulder strap. That is actually not an off-the-shoulder maxi dress but if you purchase a similar dress like that, you can easily change the upper style into an off-shoulder dress. It obviously showed my shoulder and a bit of cleavage.

Now, you might be wondering if that was even appropriate for Morocco. Yes, of course, it’s still appropriate considering that you don’t wear too revealing clothes. On the other hand, I always carried a scarf and mostly covered my chest and shoulders whenever I walked around the streets.

In some parts of Marrakech, I didn’t use a scarf while taking photos and also while sitting and eating at the restaurant, however, the majority of the time, I pretty much covered my chest and shoulders while on the streets sightseeing.

4. A Spaghetti Strap Red Dress
This red dress created a controversy when I did a live video on my Facebook page. Someone mentioned that I should be wearing a bra underneath and should be fully covered while in Marrakech. Of course, I was wearing a bra under that dress, and no I did not cover my chest and shoulders while I was doing a live video because, I was, of course, sitting at the top of the restaurant’s terrace showing the view of the Medina.

Of course, I was aware of how important it is for Muslim locals to dress conservatively, however, as mentioned above as tourists, we are not exceptionally required to be fully covered, unless, of course, if visiting in several mosques. And as long as we dress decent enough and show respect for the culture and their religion.

While I wore this red dress sightseeing the streets of Marrakech, I made sure that I also covered my chest and shoulders, because as you can see, it seems quite revealing yet still decent and flattering.

Any scarf goes well with a red dress, but I paired it with my trusted white scarf.
I also wore a light floral pink thin headscarf to match with my red dress.
This dress is super comfortable and breezy. It wasn’t very tight-fitting, yet flattering to the body. Though, I wouldn’t recommend wearing this type of dress if you’re traveling alone in Morocco.
5. A Spaghetti Strap Top, Denim Shorts, Headscarf, A Scarf, and Shoes While Hiking Morocco
I was also fortunate to be able to hike in the mountains and waterfalls in Marrakech and even rode a camel.
I decided to wear something very light and comfortable. A white spaghetti strap top, denim shorts, a headscarf, a light scarf, and my white sneakers because it was extremely hot.

Hiking through the mountain in Marrakech requires a lot of climbing through several rocky steps passing through the waterfalls that were somewhat very scary and steep. So I knew that I needed to wear shorts and my sneakers, but I did encounter some tourists that only wore sandals.
Many locals also did the hike along with the tourists.
If you decide to go on hikes and other excursions that require activities and a lot of walking, I highly suggest wearing something very light as you will be sweating all the way through.
We also stopped by several restaurants in the mountains for breaks and sightseeing. And we also stopped by a village where we were introduced to how Argan Oil is made and the end products such as the actual Argan Oils, and Argan Creams that are suitable for all skin types, especially for those with skin problems such as Eczema and Psoriasis.
6. Walking Shoes For Travel And Sightseeing
I mostly just wore my very comfortable sandals while wandering around the streets of Marrakech and exploring different tourist attractions. While on the other hand, I had to wear my white sneakers for hiking.
Wear a very comfy pair of shoes or sandals whenever you walk to sightsee.
Below are some of the most comfortable sandals and shoes that you might need prior to your adventures.
